Attendance
-
Regular school attendance is vital for a child to be successful. A child who is not in school cannot learn. For this reason, it is important that all parents make a commitment to ensure their child is at school and on time. Students absent from school on a given day are ineligible to participate in any extracurricular activities scheduled that day or evening (including dances, concerts, etc.)
- All student absences must be reported. Please notify the attendance office ( 841-7421 ext. 6603 ) before 8:00 a.m. each day your child is absent.
- If contact is not made by telephone, a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian must be sent to school on the day following the absence. Failure to properly notify the school will automatically result in the absence being labeled "unexcused" (see #5 and #6 below).
- Students will be withdrawn from school upon reaching their tenth unexcused consecutive day of absence.
- Absences from school are generally "excused" by school administration when the student is absent from school due to personal illness, personal injury, or family tragedy. Please make every effort to adjust family schedules and medical appointments to avoid missing school whenever possible.
- The definition of "truant" is an unexcused absence (as per school administration) for at least one class period during the day. A truancy may result in the student being assigned to lunch detention or to in-school detention.
- The definition of "habitually truant" means a child who is truant for at least five days within a school year. Students who are habitually truant will be subject to disciplinary action and will be referred to local law enforcement officials and the Juvenile Court Center.
- The definition of "excessive absences" means a child who is absent 18 days or more throughout the school year regardless of the reason. Students who have 18 or more absences throughout the school year will be required to have a doctor's note to excuse further absences. In addition, students who have excessive absences may be retained and may not be eligible for special field trips throughout the year.
- Students will be marked for a half day or full day absence according to the guidelines below.
Kindergarten Students
Kindergarten students who are in attendance for 90 minutes or more (not including lunch), will be counted a full day present. A kindergarten student will be counted for a full day absence if in attendance 89 (not including lunch) minutes or less.
First Grade Students
A student needs to be in attendance at least 248 minutes (not including lunch) for a full day of attendance. A student need to be in attendance between 165-247 minutes (not including lunch) for a half day of attendance. Finally, a student will be counted absent for a full day if they are in attendance for 165 minutes or less (not including lunch).
Second - Eighth Grade Students
A student needs to be in attendance at least 293 minutes (not including lunch) for a full day of attendance. A student need to be in attendance between 195-292 (not including lunch) minutes for a half day of attendance. Finally, a student will be counted absent for a full day if they are in attendance for 194 minutes or less (not including lunch).
Tardies
Students are considered tardy if they are not in their assigned classroom when the 7:30 tardy bell rings. Students arriving to school after 7:30 must first report to the attendance office for a pass. Tardies in which students have a signed parent note or are called in by their parent will be marked as excused. When a student has received 5 tardies, the teacher will contact the parent to help resolve the issue. For students in grades 3-8, a lunch detention will be assigned on the 6th tardy and every tardy following. The 8th tardy for K-8 grade students will lead to a meeting with the parents and administration.
